Physical Therapy Tools Utilized by CMI

October is Physical Therapy Month!

Here at CMI, our main focus is the rehabilitation of our clients and members. Whether that be mental health, occupational, physical or overall quality of life. Because we offer a wide variety of services, we are able to provide our members with well-rounded care.

Physical therapy is one form of treatment we offer here at CMI. Physical therapy is treatment used to ease pain and increase overall bodily function and mobility and is typically prescribed after an injury or illness.

Our physical therapist, Rob Parent, works primarily with our TBI members here at CMI.

In order to do his job efficiently, Rob has several different tools and instruments he utilizes to get the best results with clients.

Below are a few tools Rob uses during his sessions with clients.

#1 The Bosu

The bosu is primarily used to focus on balance and strength.

Exercises: Without using the railing or wall to stabilize yourself, try and keep your balance without falling over. Attempting to squat while standing on the bosu, works to strengthen muscles and improve your balance. You can make the exercises more challenging by adding free weights or focusing on single leg movements.

#2 The Agility Ladder

The agility ladder is used to work on balance, agility and control.

Exercises: They range from simple to more complex depending on the client’s needs and ability. These types of exercises are also performed in football training. High knees, grape vine and in-and-out foot work are all exercises Rob uses with clients.

#3 The Bungee

The bungee focuses on agility, balance and building strength and control by providing extra resistance.

Exercises: The bungee apparatus hooks onto a belt that you fasten around your abdomen. By attaching the bungee to a railing, you are then provided with resistance in your movements. With the bungee, you are able to work on side movements, back and forth movements and even quickness. Like the pictures above, Rob is demonstrating a more challenging exercise by adding an obstacle like a stool into the work out.

#4 The Ball

Ball exercises focus on a number of areas including the core, glutes, arms and legs. The goal of these exercises is to work on gaining back balance and strength by engaging your core.

Exercises: By keeping your feet on top of the ball and pushing your glutes up off the table, you can roll side to side or just maintain your balance in the upright position by keeping your core engaged.

Here at CMI, we specialize in treating individuals with TBI. Physical therapy is a crucial part of the rehabilitation process.
